Sunshine Stars captain Sunday Abe insists the club must
win a trophy this season and is targeting the Nigeria
Professional Football League plus the Federation Cup title.
Despite remaining atop the elite division’s log for several
weeks last season, the Owena Waves finished empty-
handed and also failed in their bid to qualify for the Caf
Confederation Cup – one of the reasons why Kennedy
Boboye resigned as head coach.
And the former Nigeria youth international knows it is vital
for the club to win some silverware this term.
“We are in dire win of a trophy,” Abe told Goal. “And there's
none more important than the Nigeria Professional Football
League title that has eluded us for decades.
“All hands have been on deck in our pre-season campaign
and the chorus is to get a trophy this season. I got married
in January and had to forgo my honeymoon to ensure we
meet this target.
Having been in Sunshine Stars for years, Abe is well aware
how important it is to topple rivals Enyimba and Kano
Pillars, but knows winning the title will not be easy.
"Our task is to keep fighting to reach to the top, and if that
means taking on Enyima and Kano Pillars all the better.
"We know any game against them is a matter of life and
death for us, especially the fans, and you have to win it.
We've got the team to beat anyone and we're ready for the
challenge.
"With a new coach in the team, my teammates need to find
the commitment to do things better because we've made
some great signings and have the talent to do great things
this year,” he concluded.
