Official: Stekelenburg joins Southampton on loan

The Netherlands international spent last season on loan at Monaco and will provide cover for the injured Fraser Forster

Southampton have completed the signing of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a season-long loan deal fromFulham.

The Netherlands international spent last season on loan at Monaco having been relegated from the Premier League in his first year with the Craven Cottage outfit, and is hopeful that he can find his best form on the south coast.

"I’m very pleased that I’ve joined," he told the club's official website.

"It’s a big, nice club that will play European football – and I can play. Last year I didn’t play a lot, so it’s an opportunity for me. I’m grateful.

"The last two years weren’t the best of my career. As they say in England: the best is yet to come."

The former Ajax man will provide cover for Fraser Forster as the England international recovers from a knee injury that is set to rule him out of action until early 2016.

He will compete with Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga for a place in Ronald Koeman's starting XI as the St Mary's outfit look to improve on their seventh-placed finish in the 2014-15 campaign.

Stekelenburg becomes the Saints' third signing of the summer after the arrivals of Josemi and Cedric Soares.
