Newcastle are hoping to take Jose Enrique back to St
James’ Park ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline with
Liverpool willing to sanction his exit.
The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has
only managed three appearances for Reds this season, all
coming in the FA Cup. He started the third-round tie against
Exeter City as a makeshift centre-back, also getting a full
run-out in the replay, in which he captained the side, and
came on in the final minute of Saturday’s 0-0 draw with
West Ham.
The Spaniard is not in Jurgen Klopp's long-term plans and
would be best served trying to secure first-team football
elsewhere.
Liverpool signed Enrique from Newcastle for a fee in the
region of £6m in August 2011 after he spent four years on
Tyneside. The defender struggled with a knee injury in
2013-14 and has since had calf and hamstring issues
coupled with a loss of form.
Negotiations between the player and the North East club will
continue on Monday afternoon, with Enrique expecting a
compensation package if he is to depart Liverpool six
months early.
He would also need to agree personal terms with Newcastle,
which has proved a stumbling block in the past.
Enrique was encouraged to leave Melwood in the summer
after holding talks with West Brom, but he could not settle
on a package with the Baggies.
