CHAN 2016: Rwanda and Cameroon knocked out

The Indomitable Lions and the host nation kissed the African Nations Championship goodbye after losing to the Elephants and the Leopards respectively in Saturday’s quarter finalRWANDA 1-2 DR CONGO

It was a sad evening for Rwanda as they crashed out of the 2016 African Nations Championship after losing 2-1 to DR Congo after extra time.

Doxa Gikanji’s missile put the Leopards ahead in the 11th minute to silence the intimidating Amavubi fans.

The Congolese dominated the game but poor finishing cost them more goals with goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye forced to make couple of brilliant saves for his team.

In the second half, the host got a lifeline as Ernest Sugira scored with Jean Claude Iranzi providing the assist. Not quite long, Sugira missed the opportunity to put his team ahead with a lob over Matampi that missed target.

The game advanced into extra time after both teams failed to find the winner within normal time, and it was the Congolese who had the last laugh with defender Padou Bompunga heading home the winner.

CAMEROON 0-3 COTE D’IVOIRE

Cote d’ivoire crushed Cameroon 3-0 at the Huye Stadium to reach the semi-final of the 2016 African Nations Championship.

Goals from Koffi Mahinde, Atcho Djobo and Yao N’Guessan helped the Elephants tame the Indomitable Lions in the quarter final.

After a scoreless result after 90 minutes, both teams proceeded into extra time. Substitute Mahinde broke the deadlock in the 94th minute while Atcho headed in the second few minutes later.

With the Cameroonians plotting a comeback, captain N’Guessan sealed the win for the Elephants as the Lions who came to the competition to emerge as African champions crashed out with heads bowed low.

Cote d’Ivoire will face the winner between Tunisia and Mali for a place in the final.
