Jurgen Klopp admits he does not have the luxury of
refreshing his Liverpool squad for the clash against a Stoke
City side he has great respect for on Tuesday night.
Due to a lengthy injury list, the German has little room to
manoeuvre in terms of rotation for the first leg of the League
Cup semi-final at the Britannia Stadium.
"We don't have that much opportunity for [changes]," Klopp
told a press conference at Melwood on Monday. "It's not
that we have six, seven, eight players to change in this
moment, we always have all of the squad with us.
“We first of all have to react to the impact the last game had
on the players and then we have to decide. At the end, it's
always that we go to this game and want to win and for this
we make the squad.
"I cannot ignore the situation in the team after this number
of games so we have to wait a little bit and use each hour.
"The session today is not a real session, it's only two days
after the game. So, for sure, it's not possible to make an
intensive training.
"I have to talk to Andy [Massey], the doctor, to Chris
[Morgan], our head of physiotherapy, and we have to make
decisions together."
Klopp revealed he has been hugely impressed with the way
Mark Hughes has transformed Stoke's style of play and also
saluted their scouting in recent seasons.
"Mark Hughes does a brilliant job there," he said. "Maybe the
biggest change in football is how Stoke played a few years
ago and how they are playing now.
"We know about the quality of Stoke of course. It's a team I
know most about because I know most of the players.
Philipp Wollscheid and all the players who played in
Germany, of course I know a lot about them.
"They're very good, especially Marko Arnautovic, who has
made really good development because he was really young
in Germany and had some problems but everybody could
see in his good moments how strong he can be.
"I don't read newspapers but I've heard nothing about him,
only seeing him scoring goals, making crosses and runs
behind the lines and things like this. That's like what you
could say about the whole development of the Stoke City
team.
"I've never met Mark before but I have big respect for what
he has done there, good scouting and a good style of play."
