FC Basel have confirmed that Mohamed Elneny missed
training on Monday and reveal that a transfer could be
completed “in the coming days”.
One of the midfielder’s former coaches with the Egypt
national side had claimed last week that the player was
having a medical with Arsenal, who are reportedly paying £5
million for the 23-year-old.
Basel resumed training on Monday following their winter
break but the club confirmed that the midfielder did not take
part.
“Also absent was Mohamed Elneny, in which there could be
a transfer in the coming days,” the Swiss club claimed in a
training report on their website.
Elneny, who has been capped 39 times by Egypt, has scored
four goals in 21 appearances for Basel this season.
When asked if a move for Elneny was imminent after
Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday,
Arsene Wenger replied: “I have nothing to say because he's
not our player and we have not signed anybody and we are
not imminently in a position where we can say we signed
anybody.
"We're out there to get somebody but at the moment we
haven't signed anybody."
