Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has insisted that the club will not be removed from the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player against Cadiz on Wednesday as they were not informed of his suspension.
Rafael Benitez included Denis Cheryshev in his starting XI for Wednesday's 3-1 first-leg win over Cadiz, with the midfielder opening the scoring after just three minutes. However, it soon emerged that the player was ineligible for the tie, having been given a suspension after picking up three yellow cards in the competition last term during his time at Villarreal.
But Perez insists the club must be safe from sanctions from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) because neither the club nor the Russian midfielder were aware of the ban.
Perez said at a press conference: "With regard to Cheryshev playing yesterday in Cadiz, after analysing what happened at the meeting of the board, I want to state the following.
"The penalty Cheryshev was given while playing for Villarreal is ineffective in our view, no one had mentioned the sanction to the player.

"As Article 41 of the RFEF's disciplinary code states, the punishment is not effective unless it notifies those to be punished.
"Real Madrid did not know of its existence, no one reported it - neither the player nor Villarreal nor the RFEF."
Cheryshev had insisted after Wednesday's clash that no one had informed him of his suspension, while director Emilio Butragueno maintained the club were in the dark as well.
Cadiz, however, say they are reporting the incident to Spanish football's governing body.
