Wolfsburg striker Nicklas Bendtner says he is "tired of being portrayed as an idiot" as he prepares to face Manchester United in the Champions League.
The 27-year-old left Arsenal for Wolfsburg in August of last year but has struggled to nail down a regular place under Dieter Hecking.
Bendtner, who has frequently made more headlines for his off-field activities, is expected to start Tuesday’s Group B clash on the bench and revealed he feels he is unfairly treated by the media.
“I don’t say yes to every interview request. I am tired of being portrayed as an idiot,” he told German magazine 11 Freunde.
“And even journalists who I trust are not capable of describing in words what I am feeling when I am not playing.”
The Denmark international has managed just two goals for his club this season but says he is working hard to be a success at Wolfsburg.
“You can ask anyone at Wolfsburg: Is Nicklas in the gym before training? Is Nicklas always in the gym after training?” he added.
“And anyone would confirm that [I am]. I have even bought an exercise bike for my flat. That I am working hard is there for everyone to see.
“I have always had a huge desire but perhaps not always the right perspective. I used to think that a forward’s responsibility was to score goals. Now I know that you have to run as well.”
