The 24-year-old joined Stamford Bridge in an £18 million (€24.6m) deal from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2013 but returned to the Bundesliga after less than two seasons in the Premier League.
Schurrle, who moved to Wolfsburg in February, claims that Mourinho wanted him to remain at Stamford Bridge but was not convinced by the Chelsea manager.
"I definitely did not fail at Chelsea,” the Germany international told Kicker.
“I always had my chance, scored important goals in the first season. At the end I just wanted the transfer, although Jose Mourinho wanted me to stay. But I did not feel the complete backing."
