Denmark Under-21s stole top spot in Group A after a 2-0 victory over Serbia sent them into the semi-finals.

Serbia knew nothing less than a win would keep their semi-final dreams alive but entered the break a goal down when Rasmus Falk latched onto a cross to tap the ball into the net from yards out.

Their predicament was made worse shortly after the restart when Viktor Fischer added a second from a free-kick to leave Serbia rooted to the bottom of the group with just one point.

Jess Thorup made four changes from the 3-0 defeat against Germany as Fischer, Pierre Hojbjerg, Riza Durmisi and Falk all returned, while Jonas Knudsen dropped out through suspension.

Serbia welcomed back captain Marko Petkovic from injury along with Aleksandar Kovacevic, Aleksandar Cavric and Lazar Cirkovic, although Filip Stojokvic pulled out with sickness just an hour before kick-off.

Mladen Dodic saw his Serbia side start the brighter of the two, as a Milos Jojic drive from the edge of the box whistled past the post and out for a corner following a slight deflection.

But within a minute Denmark had taken the lead through Falk when an unchallenged run and cross from Durmisi on the left met him for an easy tap-in just yards out after losing his marker.

Jojic came close again for Serbia on the half-hour mark when he turned sharply past two players on the corner of the box and hit a curling effort on goal, only to see it tipped over acrobatically by Busk Jensen.

Serbia created again when Marko Petkovic spotted the movement of Filip Djuricic inside the area, but the midfielder was put off by a last-ditch challenge from Durmisi and dragged his shot wide.

Denmark could have doubled their lead late on in the first half when Durmisi's free-kick hit the post, yet added a second after the break when an unmarked Fischerconverted Hojbjerg's free-kick with a half-volley.

A fine save from Marko Dmitrovic denied Denmark a third when Yussuf Poulsen carried the ball forward unchallenged and slipped in Fischer, only for the keeper to react quickly to tip his effort over the bar.

Serbia saw the game slip away from them as the second half wore on with defeat leaving them bottom of the group, while a priceless victory for Thorup's side and a draw for Germany saw Denmark move to first.
