Etim Mathew Targets First Sliverware After 32 Years with Rangers

Enugu Rangers defender Etim Mathew says he and his
teammates have set a target of winning the club’s first
league title in 32 years, when the 2016 Nigeria Professional
Football League commences, 360 Metro sports gathered.

The Flying Antelopes last won the Nigerian league in 1984
and have failed to win any major trophies since then, but
Etim is upbeat they can re-write the club’s history this year.

“We (players) have discussed within us that we should try to
win the league title this season,” Etim told Goal .

“The last time the club won a trophy was such a long time
and I wasn’t even born then, but we have agreed to put in
more effort this season,” he said.

Etim however acknowledged the challenges of winning the
title and how difficult it will be.

“I don’t think it will be easy because there are teams like
Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Warri Wolves and even Heartland.

They are all good teams and they must also want to win the
title as well, so I know it won’t be easy,” he acknowledged.

As he spoke further, Etim also mentioned the Federation’s
Cup, and said it is a competition they will also be looking at
winning, especially if winning the league doesn’t go as
expected.

“The Federation Cup is also one competition I would like us
to win. I would really like us to win both competitions but I
will take the Federation Cup if the league doesn’t work out,”
he added.

Rangers’ last triumph in the Federation Cup (then known as
the Challenge Cup) was in 1983, when they defeated DIC
Bees of Kaduna 5-4 on penalties.
