Vipers got a 1-0 victory against Enyimba in the 2016 Caf Champions League preliminary round first leg played on Friday afternoon.
A 73rd minute strike from substitute Erisa Sekisambu handed the hosts a first leg advantage at the Nakivubo Stadium.
The Ugandans had the first chance at goal in the 13th minute but Mike Mufyaba’s strike was wayward and could not threaten goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai in goal for the Aba Millionaires.
Two minutes later, the visitors had their first chance to take the lead but Andrew Abalogu headed wide Ugwu Uwadiegwu’s corner.
Vipers, cheered by their fans continued to push harder for the curtain raiser but their excesses were checked by a well organised backline of Enyimba, coupled with moment of brilliance from Afelokhai – with Halid Lwaliwa on his own part failing to convert clear cut chances.
Enyimba’s best chance came in the 29th minute with Abalogu receiving a well-tailored pass from Christian Pyagbara but fails slot the ball into an empty net.
In the second half, the momentum of the game changed with coach Paul Aigbogun bringing on Nzube Anaezemba for Olufemi Oladapo and Daniel Etor for Joseph Osadiaye – though they lacked the tact to score.
With the game looking to end in a barren draw, Sekisambu got the better of goalkeeper Afelokhai with the only goal of the game.
Vipers must avoid defeat in the second leg in Aba to stand a chance of reaching the next round of the competition at the expense of the two-time African champions
