Despite being honoured with the award for Germany Player of the Year for the fourth time, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has vowed to up his game as his national side prepare for Euro 2016.
The German's performances for the Gunners have gone a
long way to seeing the London side top the Premier League
table as it stands, but many felt his contributions in the
colours of Die Mannschaft left a lot to be desired in 2015.
“That’s football, I am used to this,” Ozil said in an interview
with the DFB . “Sometimes you are the hero, and sometimes the scapegoat.
“With that said, I am aware that my performances for
Germany may not have been as consistent as they have
been for Arsenal. My aim for 2016 is to impress [for] both.”
Over the years, the 27-year-old's name has become
synonymous with an impressive haul of assists, and Ozil
doesn't feel that altering his focus to scoring more goals will yield any overall improvements.
“At the end of the day, I try to be as successful as possible
in every single game – to win the match.
“It doesn’t really matter if I’m scoring or assisting, as long
as we win.
“I don’t think I will be doing myself any favours if I focus on
scoring more, or becoming more arrogant in front of goal –
and certainly not my team-mates.”
