David De Gea believes his save from Juan Mata’s free-kick
in February 2012 was the turning point in his Manchester
United career.
The Spaniard endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford
after joining from Atletico Madrid in June 2011, and now
admits there were times in his debut season where he felt
like returning to La Liga.
But after returning to the side, De Gea produced a stunning
finger-tip stop to deny Mata in United’s 3-3 draw with
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
“[There were] some moments where you think ‘that’s not my
place, I have to come back to Spain’. The weather, the
language. There were difficult moments, but I fight,” De Gea
told Avtex Sports.
“Juan Mata, the free-kick, probably was the point [where]
everything changed. I played better, better, better.”
De Gea also believes his performance against Andy Carroll
in United’s 2-2 draw with West Ham at Upton Park in April
2013 showed how far he had progressed.
“This game was a tough game against Carroll,” said the 25-
year-old. “And I felt strong in the moment, I’d worked hard.”
