Aston Villa to end Tiago's loan spell, set for Liverpool return

Liverpool and Aston Villa are in negotiations over scrapping
Tiago’s loan spell so the defender can return to Merseyside
this month.

Former manager Tim Sherwood sanctioned a season-long
£1million move for the 22-year-old on deadline day in the
summer, but he has not played a single minute for the
Premier League’s bottom club.

Ilori has only featured in one matchday squad for Villa and
has not convinced current boss Remi Garde of his qualities.

The Midlands side have been keen to cancel his agreement
following his inability to make any sort of mark at the club.

And with Liverpool currently having no available centre-
backs due to an injury crisis, a termination makes sense for
both parties.

However, Ilori has not played a competitive game for the
Reds since signing for £7m from Sporting Lisbon in 2013,
and it is hard to imagine him being anything other than a
stop-gap option for Jurgen Klopp.

The 48-year-old admitted Liverpool may need to turn to the
market to address their shortage of options, especially in
defence.

Given the Portugal Under-21 international’s inexperience as
well as his failure to land any playing time under two
different managers at struggling Villa, the window still
represents the club’s best chance to significantly
strengthen.
