Villarreal president Fernando Roig has hit back at Real
Madrid regarding Denis Cheryshev's Copa del Rey
suspension, insisting they are not to blame for the
confusion.
Rafael Benitez included the midfielder in his starting XI for
Wednesday's 3-1 win over Cadiz on Wednesday, and he had
an immediate impact as he opened the scoring after just
three minutes.
However, it later emerged that the 24-year-old was ineligible
for the tie, having been suspended for being booked three
times in last season's competition during his time at
Villarreal.
Madrid president Florentino Perez insists the club have done
nothing wrong as neither Villarreal nor the Spanish Football
Federation (RFEF) made them aware of his suspension prior
to the midweek game.
But Yellow Submarine chief Roig insists his club have
nothing to do with it as Cheryshev is no longer their player.
"We aren't responsible for players who are not in our squad,"
he told reporters. "Villarreal is quiet, we have
no responsibility. We are responsible for our players, no one
else's.
"I'm not going to judge Florentino. We have outstanding
people who control our sanctions, I don't now what
other clubs have.
"We have Tomas Pina in the same situation, he was sent
off in the same game that Cheryshev was booked and he
was not allowed to play on Thursday.
"We don't have a responsibility for Cheryshev."
