Sunshine Stars claimed a creditable 0-0 draw with FC Ifeanyi Ubah at the Gabros Stadium, Nnewi, as the hosts’ hopes of emerging as Nigeria Professional Football League champions suffered a massive setback.
Kennedy Boboye’s side came into Monday's clash with the Nigeria topflight returnee who are ranked out the top half of the NPFL table – as the hosts expressed their desire to avenge their 2-1 defeat in the first leg in Akure.
Although Sunshine Stars became only the fourth side to take anything away from Nnewi in the league in 2014-15, they sit a point behind Enyimba who remain atop the log which means they would require to put in their best in their remaining 16 games of the season to overthrow the Aba Elephants.
Chukwude Stephen had the first chance of the game in the 10th minute but his effort was blocked for a corner kick which goalkeeper Ezenwa saved.
In the 28th minute, Jolly Osas won a penalty for his team after he was brought down in the goal area of the Akure Gunners.
It was Chibuzor Okonkwo who stepped up to take the kick which was saved by man of the match Ezenwa to deny the home team a chance to go a goal up.
Against a Sunshine Stars that defeated Sharks 2-0 in their last game, including a Premier League debut for Anthony Omaka, Ifeanyi Ubah had the better of the second half and saw Chukwude Stephen spurn a golden opening to go ahead.
However, Amokachi's men could not find the winner that would have kept their slim League dreams alive, as Sunshine maintained their blistering run this season.
