The Super Eagles trainer says that focus will be key when they begin their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign next month despite the allure of summer.
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi expects players to show discipline despite the lure of the summer when they come together to begin their campaign for a place at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, next month.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the Afcon in Equatorial Guinea last January and missed an opportunity to defend their title.
They will begin this campaign with matches against Chad and Tanzania in June in Keshi’s second spell in charge.
“The summer time is the most difficult period you want to ask players to come and play competitive games. But I want them to be very disciplined during that period because I know they will want to go crazy and have the rest they deserve,” Keshi told Complete Sports.
“But I will be talking with the players that will be invited on the need for them to be disciplined to the cause and also remind some of them where we found ourselves months back and what goals are set to be achieved.
“If you are a top professional, if you are not a selfish person, if you put the team in front of yourself and if you are here to work 100 percent for me, for your fellow players and for the team, then we will have a wonderful relationship,” he said.
Nigeria will also contend with Egypt in the group, where the top team earns automatic qualification for Gabon 2017. The two second best teams from all the other groups will also qualify.
