BENZEMA WOULD'VE BEEN A GOOD SIGNING FOR ARSENAL - GIROUD

Olivier Giroud insists he would have welcomed the signing of Karim Benzema atArsenal this summer.

There is now a growing acceptance that Benzema is staying put in the Spanish capital but Giroud admits his fellow France international would have been a strong addition to Arsene Wenger’s side.

“The coach [Wenger] knows very well what he is doing, and sometimes you should not buy just to buy, and sometimes there are not players out there that you need, who are available,” Giroud told beIN Sports.

“We have a very good squad, with quality, and I am sure that with this squad we can go very far. But it would have been good if Karim had signed too.”

Giroud also maintains that he never had plans to leave Arsenal during the summer window.

“I would have been surprised if you had read a lot of things about my possibly leaving the club, because that was never on the table,” said the 28-year-old.

“Now, I am very good here, I say it, I repeat it. It is true that every year here there is speculation about a new striker signing.

“There were seasons when we signed [Alexis] Sanchez and [Danny] Welbeck, others when we were talking about [Luis] Suarez. It is obvious that in a club, a team, where a lot is expected, we need several good attackers and I understand that the fans want that we spend more money.”

TRANSFER TALK: JUVENTUS CONFIRM LEMINA MEDICAL

Juventus have confirmed Marseillemidfielder Mario Lemina will undergo a medical on Monday ahead of completing a move to Turin.

The 21-year-old is reportedly set to join the club on an initial 12-month loan deal, which will cost the Bianconeri €1.5 million, and could sign on a permanent basis for €10m next summer if he impresses.

A statment on Juve's website said: "French-Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina is in the city [Turin] where he is undergoing his medical examinations.

“The examinations for the Under-21 international will take place at the Clinica Fornaca di Sessant, and then at the Istituto di Medicina dello Sport in the capital of Piedmont.”

Lemina's agent revealed on Friday that negotiations were ongoing with the Serie A champions, while dismissing the prospect of a possible move to Inter or Napoli.

Juve are short of midfield options after selling Arturo Vidal to Bayern Munich and seeing Andrea Pirlo leave for New York City FC, while new signing Sami Khedira is out for two months with a thigh injury.

COPA AMERICA MISTAKES ALL MY FAULT - NEYMAR

Neymar has admitted to making "mistakes" during Brazil's Copa America campaign but insists he has seen the error of his ways.

The 23-year-old was sent off in disgrace during the group stage clash with Colombia over the summer after headbutting Jeison Murillo.

The red card saw him handed a four-match ban, which ended his participation in the tournament, but the Selecao captain is confident there'll be no repeat of that indiscipline.

"I can't feel frustrated because it was my fault and my mistake," he said. "I did things wrong and I have learnt my lesson."

Neymar's misery was compounded when he recently contracted mumps, before making his return in Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Malaga on Saturday.

"I felt good against Malaga," he continued. "I was surprised I came back so quickly and felt that good on the pitch.

"It was difficult watching the Super Cup matches at home but it's great to be back now and playing with my team-mates."

The former Santos man also expressed his wish to play in 2016 Olympic games in Rio, despite the fact that it will mean he has played in three consecutive international tournaments over the summer months.

"Everyone knows that my desire is to play in the Olympics," he added. "My wish is that people can understand and let me be free to play in the competition."

I WAS IMPATIENT TO MAKE PSG DEBUT - DI MARIA

Paris Saint-Germain debutant Angel di Maria insists he felt no pressure as he made his Ligue 1 bow in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Monaco.

PSG had not won a league match at the Stade Louis II since 2007 but they maintained their perfect start to the 2015-16 season thanks to Edinson Cavani's brace and Ezequiel Lavezzi's late strike.

Di Maria, who came on for Lucas Moura in the 66th minute, teed up Lavezzi for PSG's third goal, lofting the ball over Monaco's defence for his fellow Argentine to volley into the net with seven minutes remaining.

And, having finally made his debut after missing his new club's first three games of the season with a hamstring injury, Di Maria could not hide his joy at starting his career in France with a victory.

"It was a great game. I'm very happy, because we wanted to win and get the three points and that's what we have done," he told PSG's official website.

"It's a great start. I was so impatient to play that I didn't feel any pressure at all."

PSG coach Laurent Blanc was thrilled with how the reigning champions handled what could have been a difficult start to the season, with the capital club yet to concede in Ligue 1.

"Of our first four matches this season, we have played three away, but we have still picked up 12 points, which is excellent," Blanc said.

"We have made a very good start to the season by playing the same way, home and away. That's what we have to do this season."

CHELSEA PLAYERS MUST IMPROVE PERFORMANCES - MOURINHO

Jose Mourinho has suggested that Eden Hazard must improve his performance level after Chelsea slipped to a shock 2-1 loss toCrystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Goals from Bakary Sako and Joel Ward gave the Eagles all three points on Mourinho’s 100th home game in charge of the club – with Alan Pardew’s men inflicting only the second defeat at Stamford Bridge of the Portuguese’s Blues reign.

Mourinho has hinted that Hazard – who won the PFA Player of the Year award last season – and a number of senior players must start performing after the Blues’ stuttering start to their title defence, having taken just four points from four games thus far.

"If you are the best player in the league, I think it should be a good responsibility to have a similar season than in the previous season,” he said.

"I don't want to analyse individual performances. In general terms, it is difficult to have a consistent performance when some of the players are not performing at a good level.

"When you have six or seven performing and three or four who are not at an acceptable level, it is hard for a team to be consistent in the performance."

Mourinho insists that he will work day and night to ensure that Chelsea return to form in the coming weeks, but says it would be “sad” if his players were demotivated.

"For myself, I feel the opposite. When I win, I want to win again, I want to win more. I feel fantastic motivation for more,” he added.

"If you win it once and the next you are not on fire, not ready for at least to fight for more, that is sad.

"You have players who have fantastic seasons and fantastic moments and the next season do not have the same.

"If you ask me: 'Will I accept this, cross my arms, sit in a nice chair and wait calmly for the performance level to be back?' No.

"I have to work, react, analyse and if I feel the players are not in conditions to react and give more, I have to make changes. I have never had a problem with that."

I EXPECTED ITALY CALL UP - PIRLO

0
Andrea Pirlo says he was had expected his call up to the Italy team for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers and hopes that it is not his last.

Pirlo had been expected to end his international career after Euro 2016, he remains part of Antonio Conte's side and has been included for the upcoming matches against Malta and Bulgaria.

Despite a poor start to life in America, the 36-year-old midfielder says he had anticipated the call up from his former Juventus coach.

"Earlier this week he had phoned me to warn me that I would be called up," he toldLa Gazzetta dello Sport. "Against Malta and Bulgaria we have two important matches.

"I had hoped I would be included and I hope to have other opportunities. These are big games because we still have to play to qualify."

The ex-Juve star reflected on his old team's start to the season, admitting he did not expect them to lose their opener against Udinese but feels they will beat Roma on Sunday.

"I didn't think that Juve could lose to Udinese. But the Italian league is difficult, there are pitfalls in every game. But I believe that they are still the best team.

"I think they will win against Roma because they are the champion, although Roma has strengthened a lot and are trying to reach the level of Juventus.

"It will certainly be a balanced game and nice to see."

Pirlo admitted that things are not going smoothly for his new side who have won only one of their last six games.

"It is not going very well, but we are working hard and unfortunately we have a hard time getting points. The important thing now is to go to Italy and do well with the national team."
